Self-esteem is back!

I went to Kalanit after not being in a salon for a year and a half due to a negative experience. Kalanit was a great listener and knew exactly what to ask to understand what I was looking for. She visualized perfectly how to cut my hair into a shape that complimented me. She was thorough and did an excellent job. For the first time in a very long time, I love my hair! I highly recommend Kalanit.

In love with my curls.

My hair is VERY curly, and as anyone with curly hair knows it can be a struggle! I had kind of given in to the fact that my hair was always just gonna be difficult and crazy. But then I met Kalanit. I don't know how she does it but she cuts my hair so the shape is great and the frizz is decreased. Plus she taught me how to use the products correctly and also gave me INCREDIBLE pintura highlights. They are the kind of highlights that make people go "you look great!" rather than "did you get your hair colored?" because they are just so natural and lovely, adding dimension and definition to my curls. Please, go see her!

Embrace you curls and change your mindset all at the same time.

For my entire adult life, I fought frizzy hair, using a blow dryer, chemicals and a flat iron to straighten it, all causing damage. I knew I had waves, but in my fight against frizz, the curls never approached my radar. With Kalanit, I learned that my hair is naturally curly, and that fighting my frizz was counterproductive, causing damage that resulted in more frizz and masking my curls. Now, Kalanit cuts my hair and coaches me on how to take care of it to bring out really great looking curls. She has also supported me through the process of embracing my curls, which has been challenging. It's not only about changing my hair style. It's about changing me. I had been clinging to a neat, tailored look that wasn't suitable to my natural hair, but which perpetuated the illusion that I could control my look, along with other aspects of my life that cannot or should not be controlled. With Kalanit's guidance, my hair is now much healthier, shiny and looks great. I am still working on the control thing one day at a time, but I now see my hair as a metaphor for so much of my life. Did I mention that Kalanit also colors my hair without damaging it? It looks better than it has in years. And I cannot complete this review without raving about Kalanit as a person. I get impatient sitting in the chair while she does her magic, but she makes the time go by much quicker with her sunny personality and encouragement. I am so grateful to have found Kalanit. Try her out and change your life.

Kalanit Will ROCK Your Curls!

Kalanit is a DevaCurl Certified stylist and this woman is a magic maker with scissors. She is sweetly courteous, has a keen sense of aesthetics, the sensibility of an artist, she listens to what you need and want as far as your hair, your lifestyle and your ability to style (or not style) and above all she is gentle and non-judgemental. For decades I kept my head almost shaved because once I left Southern CA, I could not find a stylist willing to work with me and my quirky hair needs. I got one dry cut in Stanford, CA and after that heinous hack, I was leery of having anyone touch my hair, wet or dry, and spent a long time wearing hats, buns and 80s rocker bandanas to hide the disreputatable state of my locks. Kalanit works with extreme focus on your hair and sees you as a whole person, not just a 'head' but having her give a cut is not a silent, tense, high drama experience. If asked, she will give you a straight and honest opinion about your hair (cut as well as color) and she is straight forward without being abrasive, snarky or even remotely rude. She's a traveler, a gourmand and an all 'round bon vivant so conversation is continuously lively and there's always a lot of laughter. While she is in total scissor control, she will still ask your permission before using any hair spray, fluffing (or 'opening,' as she calls it) your hair and your comfort and well being are always first with her. She does not ever push products. I loved that the first time she styled my hugely unkempt mane because the DevaCurl line makes my head itch to the point where I have wanted to rip my scalp off. Kalanit's cuts actually even look good wet and when air dried or diffused, for me it's almost like the late Richard Avedon blessed my scalp and strands with a magic wand that makes me look still like me yet somehow so much better. Her cuts grow out as nicely as when I first leave her chair, which initially tempted me to go longer than every 3 months between appointments. Nope. Bad move. Kalanit cares that your hair is out in the world, representing her and Capelli Salon. You will never leave her chair looking like your room mate cut your hair PLUS your hair will look just as good on days two, ten, and twenty as it did on day one of the cut. Am I nuts about my stylist? HELL YES! Kalanit rocks!

Wavy, curly, long, hard to handle hair

It’s always a been a challenge for me to find someone to handle my long crazy, tangly, wavy/curly hot mess - and make it fall well in a healthy, and put together way! Oh my - Kalanit can! I drive an hour crosstown to come see Kalanit because she can always whip my hair into shape & give me a great cut. Kalanit not only does a great curly cuts - she also gives me beautiful natural looking highlights. Highly recommended!

Kalanit is the BEST!

I was lucky to have my first ever deva cut with Kalanit, and it was the best experience because she heard me out, and did her thing, at the same time educating me about the condition of my hair and how I can keep it hydrated, moistured and bouncy. The cut looks amazing, and all the curls are super. After washing, conditioning, and styling, Kalanit told me exactly what I needed to do in order to keep my hair healthy and frizz-free and voluminous. I really loved the entire experience because it was rejuvenating but also so informative. Kalanit was very welcoming and has such a bubbly personality that just puts you at ease because cutting your hair can be a nerve-wracking experience for some of us, but Kalanit definitely reassured me and I am so so happy with the results.

First Deva Cut

For the last several years, I went to the Aveda Institute for hair cuts because it was so cheap ($12), but because it was cut by students, it was always a toss up. Sometimes I would get amazing cuts and sometimes they were awful. The last one cut my hair way too short and I hadn't had a cut in 2 years because I was trying to grow it out. This time, I wanted to make sure to find a curly hair specialist. This was my first time getting a Devacut, and it was definitely better than a lot of the cuts I've gotten at the Aveda Institute over the years. Kalanit was my stylist, and she was very knowledgable about maintaining, washing, and styling curls and gave me some tips. I had a general idea of what I wanted but was open to other suggestions, which I told her. She did a good job with the cut itself. It wasn't too short, and I definitely have less frizz now and a much better shape. However, I wish she had done a bit more with the layers, but it was hard to tell at the time of the cut. I also asked for pintura highlights, but she did traditional foil highlights, which didn't turn out anything like I wanted. She said it was because my hair was so dark, she was afraid the pintura method wouldn't show up well enough and I could do it next time, but I kind of felt like she just didn't want to take the time to do the pintura since it was towards the end of the day. Now it looks very stripy and not natural at all, particularly when I wear it up. But when I wear it down, you can barely even see the highlights. I think I'll have to go back and get more highlights put in. So in all, the cut was better than average, but the highlights were sub-par. I'm not used to paying so much for a cut, but it looks like the prices were pretty reasonable compared to other salons I looked at. I paid $270 no including tip for cut + highlights.

Not mad

Got my first ever DevaCut with Kalanit last May. Loved it although she didn't go through the entire method of explaining to me her process. Sad she doesn't work there anymore and a bit nervous to have anyone else touch my hair. Either way my hair came out great. It's a cute salon and not bad on the price!

My first Devacut

My Stylist Kalanit was very very sweet and we connected. She helped me maintain my curls and told me what to do and what not to do as a curly girl. She was by far the best stylist I've had in a long time. I will be going back to her. Highly satisfied.

Worth the trip for Philadelphians!

I live in Philadelphia, so it's a bit of a trip, but curly girls know that once you've found a stylist who just gets your curls, you never let her go. Kalanit will not let you or your curls down. She has cut my hair 3 times now and each time we go bolder with volume. She takes the time and care to make sure all my needs are met. Can't recommend this beauty enough! Plus everyone who works there is too sweet. Trust me, go here ;)
